What workplaces did for BNF Healthy Eating Week 2016!

We had a whole week of activities including a big healthy breakfast; a healthy picnic lunch; free fruit; free company logo branded water bottles for all; fruit etc. for flavouring water; food and mood workshop; mindfulness workshop; circuits; yoga; Zumba classes and a Company Olympiads afternoon for everyone.
We had a potluck breakfast, snack swap; 2L water bottle challenge; weird and wonderful fruits and a steps challenge.
Breakfast – we already provide free cereal/toast but increased the healthy options we offer. 5 A DAY – we already provide free fruit but bought lots of exotic fruit for people to try and also savoury snacks such as radishes and mange tout. Drink plenty – we gave away 500 free water bottles in our offices. We have filtered water available but also bought sparkling water to entice people away from the fizzy drinks! Get active – gave away free pedometers and promoted the information provided for National Walking Month in May. Try something new – we purchased a free lunch for each office – healthy but tasty salads! We created emails each day based on the structure BNF provided and tailored them to our 5,000 (approx.) associates.
We kicked off with a challenge to eat breakfast every day over the Week. An email was sent to staff before to remind them of why breakfast is important and some recipes for inspiration. On Tuesday, bowls of fruit were placed in the staff kitchens. Wednesday’s theme was healthy hydration and jugs of water flavoured with fruit and vegetables were placed in break rooms. Over lunch we had a Healthy Eating Power Hour on the importance of a healthy balanced diet. On Thursday we got active! Despite the wet British summer, a small group of us ventured out over lunch and added 4,800 steps or 3.6km over the 45 minute walk. To round off the week, we held a bring-and-buy lunch to encourage people to try something new. Thanks to some wonderful volunteer cooks, we raised over £180 for charity.
What did BNF do?
All the BNF team were keen to get involved in the Week and a range of activities was planned including a bring and share breakfast; an hydration station with jugs of water and fruit, vegetables and herbs for flavour; a power walk round the local park – 3,000 steps and six flights of stairs (up and down); a Korean ‘box meal’ to share at lunchtime; afternoon tea to taste a variety of fruit, green and black teas and healthy snacks, and finally a team table tennis match to finish off the week!
