Breakfast energy bars

A recipe to acquire, develop and secure practical food skills such as knife skills, hob skills and baking while demonstrating the principles of good food hygiene and safety.

Ingredients

100g baking fat/block

200g honey

200g oats

100g mixed seeds

100g toasted flaked almonds

100g sultanas

50g ground almonds

2 x 5ml spoon sesame seeds

Equipment

Weighing scales, saucepan, heat-resistant spoon, 22cm square baking tin, sharp knife, cooling rack.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C, Gas Mark 4.
  2. Heat the butter and honey in a saucepan until the butter has melted.
  3. Stir in the remaining ingredients except sesame seeds and press into a 22cm square baking tin.
  4. Sprinkle over the sesame seeds.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes until golden.
  6. Allow to cool slightly before cutting into 12 bars.
  7. Leave in the tin to cool completely before removing.

Top tips:

  • Turn up the flavour: Add 1x5ml spoon of cinnamon to the recipe.
